IIUM Molecular and Cellular Biology Research Cluster (iMoleC) have reached another milestone when the members, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lokman Md. Isa, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Afzan Mat Yusof and Dr. Noratikah Othman, represented International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) to sign a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Borneo Rhino Alliance (BORA), an NGO engaged in wildlife conservation in Sabah. The parties agreed to collaborate in the research activities on endangered species. The ceremony had taken place at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) on 6th January 2020.
The main aim of the project is to collect tissues and biopsies from endangered species to derive cell lines for future in vitro fertilization (IVF) process. iMoleC, led by Dr. Muhammad Lokman Md Isa, has worked with Borneo Rhino Alliance (BORA) for three years now and together they have managed to conserved the cell lines for the Sumatran rhinos, which are now extinct in Malaysia. It is a promising hope for our national heritage.
